Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) – Seattle scientist Lee F. Adams died earlier this week following a climbing accident on Mount Rainier. The 52-year-old scientist reportedly was part of a four-man crew climbing down the mountain on Emmons Glacier. The group was at a height of about 13,000 feet when Adams fell 35 feet into a deep crevasse.
Officials say that another climber was hurt and two others escaped injuries during the fall. Lee Taylor, Mount Rainier National Park’s Information Officer expressed his condolence and was saddened said that the simple “misstep” had such severe consequences for the team.
Rescuers were able to retrieve Adams’ body from the crevasse on Wednesday and airlifted the remains off the mountain by helicopter.
The Washington Alpine Club’s chairman Pat O’Brian said that Adams was on the climbing trek with a friend from Texas and his friend’s two teenage sons. They were travelling through the second most popular route on the 14,411 foot mountain where the incident occurred.
